Bringing the Good Samaritan to Life: An Interactive Bible Story for Young Learners

What if children could do more than listen to a Bible story? What if they could explore it, make choices, and discover how its lessons connect to their own lives?

At Catholic Text, we’re exploring new ways to make scripture engaging, accessible, and meaningful for young learners. Our latest experiment is an interactive retelling of the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37), designed especially for children in kindergarten through second grade.

A Familiar Story, a New Experience

The Good Samaritan is one of Jesus’ most powerful teachings about compassion, kindness, and loving our neighbors.

In our interactive storybook, children follow a traveler along a rocky road and encounter the people who become part of his story. Through colorful ink-and-watercolor illustrations, simple language, and moments of choice, young readers are invited to think about what it means to notice someone in need and respond with kindness.

Rather than simply presenting the story, the experience encourages children to participate in learning its message.

Designed for Classrooms, Catechesis, and Families

The storybook combines several elements to support early childhood faith formation:

  • Age-appropriate storytelling that introduces scripture in language young children can understand.
  • Interactive choices that encourage reflection, curiosity, and conversation.
  • Illustrated scenes that help bring the biblical world to life.
  • A simple learning activity that connects Jesus’ teaching to everyday experiences.
  • Questions for parents and educators to continue the conversation beyond the screen.

The goal isn’t to replace traditional Bible reading or religious instruction. It’s to provide another tool that helps children encounter scripture in a memorable and personally meaningful way.

Exploring What’s Possible with Catholic Text

This storybook also demonstrates something bigger.

Catholic educators, catechists, and parents frequently need materials that make complex ideas understandable to different age groups. Developing those resources can take considerable time and creativity.

We’re exploring how AI-assisted tools can support that work by helping transform familiar scripture passages into interactive stories, classroom activities, discussion guides, and other educational experiences.

Human guidance remains essential. Technology can help create and adapt resources, but educators and families provide the theological context, personal relationships, and meaningful conversations that make faith formation possible.

Try the Interactive Good Samaritan Story

We’ve made this demonstration available so educators, catechists, parents, and anyone interested in Catholic education can explore what an interactive approach to scripture might look like.

We’d love to hear how you might use an experience like this in a classroom, parish religious education program, or family setting.

The Good Samaritan reminds us that loving our neighbor is more than knowing the right answer. It’s about recognizing opportunities to act with compassion.

Perhaps interactive storytelling can help children begin practicing that lesson, one choice at a time.
